‘Anonymity Online is an Mirage’: Australian Teen Indicted Over Alleged Active Shooter False Report in the US

An adolescent from the state of NSW has been formally accused following accusations he issuing several hoax reports to emergency services – a practice called “swatting calls” – wrongly stating gun violence incidents were occurring at major retail and schools throughout the United States.

International Probe Leads to Legal Action

The Australian federal police charged the boy on the 18th of December. Authorities allege he is a member of a purported decentralised online crime network concealed by anonymous accounts in order to prompt an “rapid and large-scale emergency response”.

“Commonly male youths aged from 11 to 25, are engaging in activities like swatting calls, releasing private info and hacking to earn credibility, infamy and prestige in their internet circles.”

During the case, authorities seized multiple electronic devices and an illegal weapon found in the juvenile’s possession. This seizure was executed by a specialized task force created in the final quarter of 2025.

Law Enforcement Provide a Strong Caution

Graeme Marshall, commenting broadly, advised that those operating under the illusion they can commit crimes from behind a computer and encrypted identities should be warned.

Australian police stated it initiated its investigation after getting tip-offs from American law enforcement.

A senior FBI official, from the International Operations Division, said that the “risky and disruptive offense” of hoax 911 calls put lives at risk and drained critical public safety assets.

“This incident proves that secrecy online is an false notion,” he commented in a shared press release with authorities.

He further stated, “We are committed to collaborating with international partners, our overseas colleagues, and tech companies to identify and bring to justice individuals that exploit digital tools to inflict damage to the public.”

Court Process

The teenager has been indicted on multiple counts of misuse of telecom services and a further count of unauthorised possession of an illegal weapon. The individual potentially faces up to fourteen years in a correctional facility.

“The police's duty (is|remains) to preventing the distress and anguish individuals of these digital criminal groups are causing to society, while laboring under the illusion they are hidden,” the official stated.

The youth was scheduled to appear in a New South Wales youth court on the following Tuesday.
