Former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital, Nigerian authorities confirmed on Wednesday evening. The 36-year-old was involved in a car accident in the Lagos area on the 29th of December, a tragic incident that claimed the lives of two of his team members.
The sports star had been under observation while recovering from minor injuries, representatives confirmed on Monday. A government official, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed in an update online that Joshua was deemed clinically fit to leave and heal privately.
“Joshua and his mother were at the mortuary in Lagos this afternoon to pay their final respects to his two departed friends as they were being made ready for the journey back,” the commissioner stated.
Those who lost their lives were confirmed to be Latif Ayodele, Joshua's trainer, and Sina Ghami, a strength and conditioning coach. The official further stated that the boxer was “heavy-hearted and deeply emotional over the passing of his two trusted companions.”
The news of his discharge arrives after the boxing community offered condolences for the star in the wake of the devastating accident.
