A high-speed vehicle while fleeing police crashed into a crowded nightspot in the early hours on the weekend, killing four individuals and wounding 11 in a historic district of Tampa, renowned for its nightlife and visitors.
Aerial surveillance team with the local law enforcement agency observed the car driving dangerously on a freeway at about 12.40am after police said the light-colored car had been observed illegally racing in a different neighborhood, according to a law enforcement announcement.
The state highway patrol caught up with the vehicle and tried to perform a tactic that involves striking a back fender of a fleeing car to make it to spin out, called a pit, but it was unsuccessful.
Highway patrol personnel “ended pursuit” as the car raced toward the historic Ybor City area near the city center, local police reported. Eventually, the motorist failed to maintain control of the car and struck over a dozen individuals near the establishment, officials said.
Three individuals perished at the scene and a fourth victim succumbed at a medical facility. As of Saturday morning, a fifth casualty was hospitalized in critical state, and eight other patients were being treated at area hospitals but were listed as stable, authorities said. 2 other individuals experienced minor harm and declined treatment at the scene. Every one of the 15 people are adults.
“What happened today was a senseless tragedy, our hearts are with the loved ones of the deceased and all those who were affected,” the local police chief said in a statement.
Officers named the suspect as 22-year-old the individual, who was arrested on the weekend and is being detained at the Hillsborough county jail.
Legal documents showed the suspect has been charged with four counts of vehicular homicide and 4 charges of serious fleeing or eluding with serious bodily injury or death. Each are first-degree crimes. No attorney was recorded for Sampson.
“The community feels the tragedy,” said the city’s leader, previously was the city’s initial woman police chief, in a post on online platforms.
“My thoughts are with everyone affected. The investigation into this crash is ongoing, and efforts are underway to obtain explanations,” the statement added.
In recent years, certain regions and local agencies have pushed to limit the use of rapid car chases to safeguard both the public and police. After a rise in deaths, a recent study supported by the US justice department called for police chases to be rarely used, noting that the risk to individuals, officers and bystanders often outweighs the immediate requirement to take someone into custody.
Still, the state has doubled down on the methods, with the state’s highway patrol amending its guidelines to loosen restrictions on the application of car chases and precision techniques. The justice department-backed report described those tactics as “dangerous” and “controversial”.
