The containment structure covering the Chernobyl reactor core within Ukraine can no longer perform its main safety function of blocking radiation, as announced by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This loss of function follows a drone attack earlier this year that caused significant damage in the structure.
A drone strike in February severely damaged the multibillion-euro “New Safe Confinement” arch. This massive shield, built at a cost of €1.5bn and completed in 2019, was designed to seal off radioactive material over the long term. A recent IAEA inspection last week found that the strike had weakened the structural integrity of the steel arch.
The [protective structure] had lost its primary safety functions, including the confinement capability, stated IAEA director general Rafael Grossi. Grossi noted that inspectors found no permanent damage to key support structures or sensor systems.
The original 1986 explosion at Chornobyl – which occurred when Ukraine was a republic within the USSR – spewed radiation over much of Europe. In a hurried containment effort, Soviet authorities built a concrete “sarcophagus” over the damaged reactor, though it possessed only a three-decade design life. The new confinement was constructed to allow for the future dismantling of the original structure, the damaged reactor building, and the melted nuclear fuel within.
Although limited repair work has been done, agency officials stressed that comprehensive restoration is absolutely necessary. This is required to prevent further degradation and to ensure long-term nuclear safety. Ukrainian authorities had stated that a unmanned aircraft armed with a powerful explosive struck the facility, causing a fire and damaging the protective cladding.
The situation underscore the persistent risks at one of the world's most infamous atomic accident locations amid continued hostilities.
