Glasgow Warriors kicked off their European campaign in perfect fashion with a valuable four-try win on the road against Sale Sharks.
Taking advantage of the elements at their backs, the hosts began the brighter and built a fourteen-point advantage within 20 minutes. Tries from Ernst van Rhyn and youngster Ollie Davies put them in command.
However, the visitors responded admirably with a pair of scores prior to the interval. Hooker Gregor Hiddleston and back-rower Darge both went over to narrow the deficit.
Further second-half scores from Kyle Steyn and centurion Stafford McDowall pushed the Warriors' advantage to twelve points. Marius Louw's try for Sale promised a nervous finale, but Glasgow stood strong to secure a major opening victory.
The match began with a quick try as Sale captain Van Rhyn scored from close range after just two minutes. An early injury to midfielder Rekeiti Ma'asi-White introduced teenager Ollie Davies into the fray for his cup debut.
The youngster made an instant contribution. Moving to fly-half, he took a smart support line to collect an offload and touch down, making Sale's lead.
Facing challenging conditions, the Warriors turned to their set-piece to get back into the contest. A powerful driving maul was touched down by hooker Hiddleston. Just before the break, Rory Darge forced his way over, with Hastings' conversion making it a two-point deficit at half-time.
The Scottish club seized the advantage for the first occasion soon after the second half. A misjudged box-kick was collected by number eight Jack Dempsey, who set up skipper Kyle Steyn to burst through a challenge and race away to the try-line.
Now in the ascendancy, they clinched the fourth try when McDowall ran through a tackle to celebrate his 100th appearance for the club. This try completed a run of twenty-six unanswered points.
Sale found a late hope when Marius Louw showed good footwork to cross. The conversion made it a five-point game with minutes left.
A final chance arose for them from a throw in the corner, but they lost the possession, sealing Glasgow's triumph.
Sale must regroup ahead of a trip to face Clermont Auvergne this weekend. In contrast, Glasgow will host six-time winners Toulouse to their home ground.
The two sides are placed in a strong Pool One that also features Saracens and Durban-based outfit the Hollywoodbets Sharks.
