One-time economic leader Larry Summers is leaving the board at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a series of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became publicly available.
He remarked in a release that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have served, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and look forward tracking their advancement".
The prominent academic, who once led the prestigious university, declared on recently that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
The newly public emails showed that Summers communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 detention for alleged human trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the technology organization said it understood Summers' determination to step down.
"We value his many contributions and the insight he provided to the Board," the company stated.
This development arrives after both chambers of Congress voted on recently to endorse a bill that would compel the Department of Justice to make public its documents on Epstein.
The legislation will then move to the administration of US President Donald Trump for signature. Trump has indicated he intends to approve the bill, after changing his view on the subject following pressure from his base.
A batch of financier-linked correspondence made public by the Congressional committee days ago mentioned multiple prominent individuals in the financier's former circle, without indicating any criminal activity by those figures.
The communications revealed that the economist and Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often trying to link the official to prominent global figures.
After the messages were shared with the general audience, he stated he took "complete accountability for my misguided decision to continue interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he hoped "to reestablish trust and repair relationships with the individuals most important to me".
The professor served in leadership roles under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He presided over the institution from 2001 to 2006 and is still a professor there. When announcing his departure from public commitments previously on this week, he said he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning policy institute in the capital where he was a researcher, announced that Summers was ceased to be associated with the institution.
He entered the leadership of OpenAI, which develops the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its chief executive OpenAI's head.
