R360 Competition Players Hit With 10-Season Suspension from Australia's Rugby League
The rugby star won 20 caps for the All Blacks before changing allegiance to Samoa.
Australian rugby league's administration has stated that participants who enter the “breakaway” R360 competition will be prohibited for 10 seasons.
R360, scheduled to begin in late 2026, is aiming to attract players from union and league with lucrative deals and a condensed playing schedule.
Prominent rugby league players have allegedly been contacted by the new league, which will include six to eight men's sides and four women's teams operating from major cities globally.
Representing Samoa Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, who is with New Zealand Warriors in the NRL, has confirmed he has had talks with R360.
Ryan Papenhuyzen, Lomax, Payne Haas and Jye Gray are also reported to be thinking about signing R360.
Eight major union teams, including Australia, recently announced a ban on players joining R360 appearing in test matches.
“We have consulted our franchises and we've responded strongly,” stated ARLC head Peter V'Landys.
“Regrettably, there will always be entities that try to exploit our code for potential financial gain.
“They fail to contribute in development systems or the development of athletes. They simply exploit the efforts of other organizations, putting players at risk of monetary damage while profiting themselves.
“Essentially, they are, imitating the sport.”
R360 is established by former England World Cup winner Tindall and supported by commercial backers.
Following the prospective rugby union prohibitions were declared earlier, it stated: “We seek to cooperate together as part of the global rugby calendar.
“The event is arranged with bespoke schedules for men's and women's teams and R360 will permit participants for test matches, as written into their agreements.”
The new league will request authorization for its initiatives from World Rugby, rugby union's governing body, at its board session next year.
