New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this Tuesday, reacting to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's response pointed to the notorious bounty scandal issue from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.
At that time, the NFL determined that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering hard hits on rival teams. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.
The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments following the Broncos' remarkable comeback win over the New York. The coach suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.
Had Wilson stayed on the roster by March 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, ending the contentious split between the quarterback and his coach.
