The Contents of that Briefcase Henry Opens in the Hit Series?

For much of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive inside a mental fortress built from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their quest for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to relive a defining event from Henry's childhood—a moment that potentially carries the means to overcome him for good.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

When she finds Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a viewing device pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies not within the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a child version of Henry encounter an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the act went deeper than a defensive killing.

An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to hand over to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their parallel research. The man in the tunnel is that employee.

The Briefcase's Contents

Based on what is revealed about his research, the case almost certainly contained some of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, causing the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would later pass on to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the case could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The stage play explains that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. As a youth, he struggles with the influence of a dark entity, much like how the character Will was possessed by the entity in the past.

A Weaponized Emotion

His lasting fear associated with the mine demonstrates how deeply scarring the incident was for him. While he controls the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to gain strength.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a critical advantage in the series finale ahead.
