During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
