One snub was enough. Another and it could have seemed spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, who is far too wily not to realize that claiming the World Cup trophy will likely need the involvement of the talented midfielder, even if it is also Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the strategic frameworks and squad hierarchies necessary with England now that he is back in Tuchel's supportive environment.
Tuchel wants the player's competitive fire, his intensity, but it is about using it constructively. Individual quality counts but England have learned the hard way that there is a price to pay when stardom dominates. Still, a message has been sent.
Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after his omission of the recent team selection. He watched England book their place at next summer’s World Cup without him. He saw Morgan Rogers excel as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as Tuchel mention valuing the team's dynamism and ethics. Naturally, Bellingham has responded in top form, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid against their rivals and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.
The expectation is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham directed towards intimidating opponents instead of teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is little benefit to creating tension with an elite performer in the world. The best outcome is that his period on the sidelines has made him realize that representing the national team is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, for his part, can now throw a protective shield around the youngster after demonstrating that he is not afraid to take tough decisions.
“No issue exists with him, and no concern about his personality,” Tuchel commented. “Bellingham displays that aggression. You need a certain edge to achieve greatness that he has. We all must help him and create an environment which he can [have] this edge against rivals and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham dominated the spotlight at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s meaningless matches against Serbia and Albania. Who else? Well, how about Phil Foden? Here is another prodigious No 10 requiring coaching. He has not played for the national team since March and has struggled to perform well this year but Tuchel had to consider the 25-year-old after how he played in the Champions League match versus Borussia Dortmund recently.
The issue, however, is how to use the attacking talents at available. Morgan Rogers and Eze merit inclusion and there will be compelling reasons to pick Cole Palmer once he overcomes a ongoing injury. Would taking five No 10s to the tournament be an overkill? The previous manager never found the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by forcing both stars into the starting lineup, cramping Harry Kane’s game as a result.
It is hard to see Tuchel repeating that if it disrupts the attacking balance. Space exists for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the wings. Clarity is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the recalled Wharton will battle another player as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be central. Tuchel wants him close to the striker. “It is illogical to tell Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but no spot exists on your best position, can you play the left side? Or the other flank?’” he said. “He is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this idea about him for years. In my view it suits him best.”
Tuchel agreed there are times when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “You feel as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy to play football, then obviously an issue exists, be it the position, the environment, it's unclear.
“In my opinion he is also accustomed to representing Man City in a certain structure, to have a clear task. Believe he benefits a lot from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? When should I to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defensive duties?”
The manager mentioned Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and the other netting strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his good displays for City at left-back. Interest abounds.
Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for Kane in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at using Foden as a deep-lying striker against one opponent or the other. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and the winger are alternatives should he be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for trying new things.
At the same time, it is also a chance to get the understanding with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that you have to go back to the latter assisting Kane to net in an international match versus Scotland in over a year ago to discover the one and only time in 35 games for the national team when the pair combined for a goal. The coach will know that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.
“At this point at some point it falls to the responsibility of the players,” Tuchel stated. He does not shy away to be blunt. There is still a sense of the player being on trial. He may not be guaranteed to begin against the upcoming opponents. The manager wants Bellingham onside but he will be monitoring him carefully. Set aside self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a powerful England team into an even better one.
